Getting started
A practical guide from the learner permit through supervised practice toward the next license milestone.
1. Check your permit and supervision rules
Start with your state motor vehicle agency to confirm permit eligibility, required instruction, approved supervisors, minimum holding periods, and any restrictions.
2. Begin supervised practice
Once legally eligible to practice, log short, focused drives with a qualified adult. Build experience gradually, including driving at different times and on different roads when appropriate.
3. Keep a reliable record
Record dates, duration, night-driving practice, and any supervisor certifications your state requires. See our logging guide.
4. Verify the next licensing step
Driving hours are one part of the process. Depending on your state, you may also need driver education, knowledge or skills testing, an age threshold, and a permit holding period. Compare state resources and confirm details directly with your agency.
